Westbrook School District, Maine
Just a few miles from Portland, ME, the Westbrook School Department is serving an increasingly diverse and vibrant group of families and students from around the world. When The Creative Group Discourse Group began working with the district several years ago, the majority white school leadership team had very little experience discussing ways to address racism and inequities. It was tough going at first; there were hurt feelings and resistance among educators who felt that their individual dedication to students would be enough.
Through our work, these leaders have built a shared understanding about the ways systems perpetuate inequities. They have developed the relationships and trust required to have authentic conversations about the implications for students and the school district. They have budgeted time and financial resources to center equity in their work. The district now has an Equity Resource Coordinator and an Equity Task Force that is working towards changes in curriculum and hiring practices. The district is engaging with the broader community through a range of partnerships, including the One Westbrook coalition.
In addition, district leaders are bringing conversations and learning about equity to the full staff. They have made a stand, publicly stating that “schools have an obligation to stand at the center of justice. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not partisan issues, but rather prerequisites of high quality education for all children” They are building the commitment, momentum and infrastructure needed to fulfill their promise of the “the best education for all for life.”
